Email Quote of Note
A correspondent writes from Turino IT, where she enjoyed the local specialty, a Bicerin. "It was in a heavy-footed glass, about 7 oz. The bottom 3 oz were a mixture of boiling hot melted unsweetened chocolate and espresso. And then poured carefully on the top was about an inch of unsweetened cold heavy cream."

The most famous guide for writing (American) English is William Strunk and E. B. White's Elements of Style. This bible for writers has now been illustrated. NPR has a story on the artist, Mira Kalman.

Welcome!

Thanks for clicking on our page. Check it out. After you look at our latest news, send us email and tell us your news. As you probably know, our address is: snydder -- that's with two d's, one for Dan and one for Dave -- @earthlink.net. Of course, the stuff in italics isn't part of the email address, it's just in there to fool email address scavengers.

It's now November, the rainiest month of the year in Seattle. We need something bright to perk up the gray skies. This picture is definitely bright. It was supposed to be on our Shanghai Web page, but we forgot about it.

Do you think Julie is wearing a pink shirt or is she wearing a white shirt that reflects the color around her?

News and Notes

  • A pod of killer whales breached offshore from our house.
  • Dave went to a "Mac & Cheese" competition. (People do very unusual things in Chicago!) His recipe tied for honors in the Best Contemporary Mac & Cheese catagory. For our non US friends, "Mac" is short for macaroni, small bent tubes of pasta. Macaroni and cheese can be a very tasty food. In the US Kraft Foods Inc sells it in a box: macaroni with a packet containing a substance related to cheese. Children like it. They can fix it for themselves. So, Mac & Cheese is a famous American "comfort food." Dave's winner did not come from a box.
  • Dan is too busy with research and teaching to have time to make Mac & Cheese from a box, let alone enter a competition.
We're having real trouble solving the advanced level Su Doku, so stop by and help out.
