07 . July . 08

Our sabbatical has started! Here we are, moments before leaving, trying to figure out how to get everything into the car. By 1:00 PM, July 1st we were finished and ready to go to Vancouver, British Columbia, our first stop.

On our arrival an informal parade was passing our apartment. We were delighted with the festive welcome. Then we remembered that July 1st is Canada Day!

But the celebration put us in a party mood, too. We hope it lasts all year.

News & Notes

  • Dan had a story published on the Web. He's the paleontologist, not the writer. But he enjoys writing for fun.

  • Before leaving Seattle, we joined Brian Paradee's Whirly Ball party. Although his birthday was in May, he waited to celebrate until Jeff, his dad, returned home on leave from Afghanistan.

That's Brian in car 11, his sister Anna under the basket with the ball in car 13, and Jeff in car number 8. Under captain Brian's leadership, his teams won 3 of 4 games! GO BRIAN! If you have forgotten how Whirly Ball is played, see October 2006 for an explanation.

  • Captain Jeff has been directing much of the reconstruction of Afghanistan as a Navy SeaBee. It's different than engineering in America. For example, someone must remove the land mines before digging starts.
