Reykjavik, The City

Reykjavik is the capital.   This is the Alþingi (Parliament) made out of quarried lava. The building is completely open with no sign of security.  The architecture is very individualized among the houses.

Churches are also diverse … In front of the cathedral is a statue of Leif Eiríkson, given to the people of Iceland in 1930 by the people of the United States, to celebrate Iceland’s 1000th anniversary.  The corrugated metal siding on the small church is getting a repainting.

Here’s Ingólfur Arnarson’s well. Arnie had to settle for water, but J goes directly to espresso.

These sweaters were all hand knit by the Icelandic Hand Knitting Association, 300 knitters from around the country.
