Thingvedler (Žingvellir)

This wall, one side of a huge crack, is the trailing edge of North America.  Smaller cracks are visible everywhere as the earth pulls apart.

In front of this section of the wall (North America), the assemblies met annually.  In 1994 on the 50th anniversary of Iceland’s official independence, a celebration was held here at which 1/3 of the population was present.

These deep cracks have filled with ground water. J took one picture, L took one, and we’re of two minds as to which is best … you can vote, but at your own risk.

By the way the “Ž” is the Icelandic letter thorn.  It is pronounced with a voiced “th” sound as in “the”.
