It took two
days to get from Seattle to Haida Gwaii. Driving is better than flying because
we could see the Canadian Rocky Mountains up close.
It’s very rugged
country. In places the road is so steep, that they post a diagram of the road
for truck drivers. This allows the drivers to know where the curves are and
safely drive without losing their brakes. Also, the towns are very far apart,
so all drivers must be sure to keep the fuel tank full. [132 km = 80 miles]
In Prince
Rupert we boarded the Queen of Prince Rupert ferry to Haida Gwaii. It makes
five trips per week. Vehicles are packed very tightly on the ferry. Our small
car was assigned an adjustable deck that was raised so another row of small
cars could be packed beneath it. The white truck at right is 1" (2.5cm)
away from the red poles holding up the adjustable ramp.
It was a
glorious day for the 6.5 hour
journey. We watched for whales ... but we only saw scenery.
The return to
the Canadian mainland sails at night, so we had a berth. It was pretty small,
but we were comfortable and got a good night’s sleep, despite the many odd
noises.
