Email Quote of Note
One of our more philosophical correspondents commented on whether or not we can see air. "Air is definitely a thing. But air, like so much else, is only visually evidenced by its effects (see also: torpor, NAFTA, postmodernism and funk)."

Site Seeing
On 29 September 2006 The World radio program interviewed Archbishop Desmond Tutu about the world situation. As always, this interview was deep and forceful.

Thanks for clicking on our page. Check it out. After you look at our latest news, send us email and tell us your news. As you probably know, our address is: snydder -- that's with two d's, one for Dan and one for Dave -- @earthlink.net. Of course, the stuff in italics isn't part of the email address, it's just in there to fool email address scavengers.

Welcome!

Email is a terrific technology. It's cheap. It's fast. It's asynchronous, that is, it waits for you until you are ready to read it. You can attach pictures and movies. And, when you want to look something up in old mail, it can be searched electronically. Try that with letters or phone calls! So, it is no surprise that some people are so eager to read or send email that even when they are on vacation they have to stop along the road and login whenever possible. Here is one of those people using the wireless connection from this rustic woodland store to check her email.

The quaint old-fashion gas pumps contrast with her wireless Mac! (The photographer, it should be mentioned, remembers that email is asynchronous -- it will wait until he's ready to read it.)

News and Notes

  • On a gorgeous sunny afternoon, we drove to the east side of the Cascade Mountains. As we stopped by the Wenatchee River for our picnic lunch, we saw one of the miracles of nature: The migration of salmon home to spawn.

Salmon are born in the fresh water of mountain streams. As tiny fish (smolt) they swim to the ocean where they spend 4-6 years growing into large fish. Then they leave the salt water to migrate upstream to their birthplaces. How far do they swim? See the map. From the ocean to the place on the Wenatchee River where we took their picture is 500 miles (800 KM) up river!

  • Also arriving at his birthplace, on 22 September 2006, was Cole Harrison Shadle. His parents are our nephew Eric and Jolene Shadle, and his brother is Calvin.

  • We have begun using video conferencing (iChat) to chat with Dan and Tomoko over the Internet. It is a tremendous amount of fun to be able to have a face-to-face conversation. If you have video set up on your computer, we'll exchange screen names and start chatting! If you want to get a camera for your computer and try this, there is a great tutorial explaining how to get started.

You're welcome at our home, whether you swim, fly or drive!
