Where’s That?
The Queen Charlotte Islands are off of the West Coast of Canada, north of Vancouver Island. We drove our red Jeep 1000 miles (1600 Km) from Seattle to Prince Rupert, British Columbia. We passed through Prince George ... it’s the shortest route because of the mountains! Then, we traveled by ferry for 6.5 hours to the islands. Getting to the islands took us two days. The solid lines are roads, the dotted lines are ferries. It looks like the Queen Charlottes are just one island, but they are an archipelago of hundreds. Haida Gwaii The Queen Charlotte Islands are known as Haida Gwaii (HIDE-uh gwy) to the Haida Indians. This is their ancestral home. They are famous for carving totem poles, building canoes out of cedar trees and sewing button blankets. But Haida Gwaii is also populated by European immigrants from mainland Canada. There are about 5000 people total in four main towns. More than half of Morsby Island (the main southern island) is a national park, Haida Gaanas. Most visitors come to Haida Gwaii to go fishing or kayaking. Being lazier than most people, we came to hang out. A Few Million Pixels We’ve taken a bunch of pix. Select from these topics. Note that we have many more fascinating pictures of
Haida life including canoes, boxes, etc. We promised the Haida not to post
them on the Internet. So, please come for a visit to see the rest of the
story. |
