Our winter IS gray, but it's gray in a very expansive way. It reminds us of the artwork of Takao Tanabe.
In February Cafe Edible Canada held a dinner in Vancouver featuring several chefs from the Tofino Ucluelet Culinary Guild. Tofino is a resort town on the remote west side of Vancouver Island. The food was terrific, beginning with oysters on the half shell, and finishing with a beet dessert -- yes, that's right -- beet meringues with blood orange, chocolate sauce, and sprinkled with sea salt. It was sweet, fruity and delicious!

L's former graduate student Calvin Lin, who is now a Professor at the University of Texas at Austin, has been awarded the prestigious Jean Holloway Teaching Award. Students both nominate candidates, and select the winner. L was on hand in Austin as Calvin explained that although it seems teaching is about giving to students, it is in so many ways much more about receiving from them.
