We enjoyed the last days of sunny weather with two friends from Norway.
Karoline and Hilde
Julie's former student Hilde Borgir and her niece Karoline Berntsen visited for several days. They toured all of the sights around Seattle including this view of the city from the ferry. There was a trip to Vancouver to see the UBC Anthropology Museum, and one to San Francisco to see ... well, everything!

Happy Birthday, Tomoko!
One of the advantages of hosting guests from afar is how much you learn about the world. Karoline is an avid handball player. After several days of good conversation about handball, L gave her a tour of UWs sports facilities. Karoline was surprised to see the tiny handball courts and wondered how 14 players could fit in the small space.
Eventually, we figured out that there are two very different sports called 'handball'. One is played (only?) in America. And one is an Olympic sport played worldwide."14?! It's either 2 or 4." "No. It's 7 on each team." "7? Team? I thought we were talking about handball." "So did I."
We like this picture. These two preƫminent gardeners -- shown here in Dave's Ginkgo Garden in Chicago -- probably jammed their hands into their pockets to keep from pinching back plants and pulling weeds. Whatever the reason, we can't see their green thumbs.
Jim Shadle & Dave Snyder
We held a party for about 40 celebrating the engagement of our friend Catie Burr to Patrick Sullivan. Here, Catie's father Ken emphasizes the solemnity of the commitment they have made.

It was a beautiful day for the party, but it was the last one. Fall is here. It's snowing in the mountains and time for fires in the fireplace.
