What's more fun than the World Cup? If your team wins, nothing! Happily the Women's World Cup was being played in cities across Canada, including Vancouver. With the stadium only 3 blocks from our condo, we had to go. So, we signed up for a "Group of Sixteen" game before we knew who would be playing. It turned out to be Canada vs Switzerland. It was a very balanced game, but Canada managed to hit one of its shots on goal. 'Hurray' for the local ladies!

Congratulations to the US women, who took First!!
News & Notes
When July rolls around, it is time to celebrate national holidays. Canada Day (1 July) in Vancouver is always a party with everything from a Citizenship Ceremony to street hockey for 6 year olds. Of course, everyone is wearing red.
And the Mounties always get their man!
US Independence Day in the our neighborhood begins with a parade composed of kid-decorated vehicles and a firetruck. This year our friends Pirkko and Brad Borland were the grand marshalls to the delight of their granddaughter Sovie (in front of the firetruck).Trained early, Americans are the best at flag waving
The salamanders, reported on last time, have pushed on to the next stage of life, which apparently doesn't involve our pond. Since about mid-July they have not been seen at the local watering hole.
We joined a Hardy Fern Foundation's tour of the Miller Garden in Seattle for an intense class on -- you guessed it! -- ferns. We learned, for example, the differences between the fern on the left and the fern on the right.
We can't tell them apart, either, but they're different
The canning season is underway. The first round included dill pickles, Old South sweet pickles and apricot jam. Green Fig jam (not shown) was made possible by a generous donation from Carolyn Harano.
Sadly, we must wait six weeks for the pickles to mature
As regular readers know one of our summer traditions is to watch the fireworks at English Bay in Vancouver. This year the competitors were China, Brazil and Canada. J thought Brazil was best, but L picked Canada, and the official judges (all Canadians) picked Canada, too.

For this month's entry in the "Sea to Shining Sea" contest we offer the photo of two boats on Puget Sound at the end of the day at the end of July. What's that black dot?
Literally shining
